New Delhi: H Shankar has been appointed as the new Managing Director (MD) of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL), a subsidiary of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the appointment, and Shankar officially assumed the role effective April 1, 2025.
Shankar, who previously served as the Director (Technical) at CPCL, had been holding additional charge as MD since July 16, 2024. According to the official order issued by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), Shankar’s tenure as MD will continue until his superannuation on March 31, 2029, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has been formally notified of this decision.
A seasoned professional with over three decades of experience in the petroleum and refining sector, Shankar has been instrumental in CPCL’s technological advancements and operational efficiencies. His promotion comes at a critical time as CPCL is focused on expanding its refining capacity and strengthening its role in India’s energy security.
Shankar holds a Mechanical Engineering degree and an MBA in General Management, equipping him with in-depth knowledge in business management, strategic planning, and leadership. Throughout his career, he has played a pivotal role in project management, successfully leading several large-scale refinery projects from initiation to completion. His expertise in contracts management has contributed to cost optimization and timely resource delivery, while his emphasis on health, safety, and environment (HSE) has helped cultivate a strong safety culture within the organization.
As the new MD of CPCL, Shankar is expected to continue driving the company’s growth and success while ensuring its continued contribution to India’s energy sector.
