New Delhi: India is moving ahead with Heron Mk2 drones procurement to strengthen its defence surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. The Indian Armed Forces have decided to acquire more of these advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) under emergency provisions.

This decision comes after the operational success of these drones in recent missions and growing security needs along sensitive borders.

Why Do India Need HAL Elcom Heron Mk2 Drone Deal

India’s decision is based on modern battlefield requirements and recent operational experience.

  • The drones proved highly effective during Operation Sindoor.
  • All three services — Army, Navy, and Air Force — are now planning to deploy them.
  • The Indian Navy will induct these drones for the first time, replacing older systems.

These UAVs help in real-time intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), which is critical for monitoring borders with China and Pakistan.

What is Heron Mk2 Drone?

The Heron Mk2 is a highly advanced UAV developed by Israel Aerospace Industries.

Key Features:

  • Endurance: Up to 45 hours
  • Altitude: Up to 35,000 feet
  • Type: Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) UAV
  • Equipped with satellite communication (SATCOM) for long-range missions

It is mainly used for:

  • Border surveillance
  • Intelligence gathering
  • Target tracking
  • High-value threat detection

What is Indian Armed Forces Emergency Procurement

India is using emergency procurement powers to fast-track the deal.

  • Armed forces can buy equipment up to ₹300 crore without long procedures.
  • This allows quick strengthening of defence capabilities during urgent situations.

Such fast approvals became necessary after rising tensions and evolving warfare technologies.

Tri-Service Deployment Strategy

The procurement will make Heron Mk2 a tri-service asset.

Deployment Plan:

  • Indian Army: Already deployed in northern sectors for border monitoring
  • Indian Air Force: Expanding fleet for high-altitude surveillance
  • Indian Navy: First-time induction for maritime security

This integration will improve coordination and provide a unified surveillance network.

Make in India Push: HAL and Elcom Talks

India is not just buying drones — it is also planning local manufacturing.

  • Discussions are ongoing with HAL and Elcom for production in India.
  • Aim is to achieve 60% indigenous content in future projects.
  • This may lead to technology transfer and boost India’s defence industry.

This step will reduce dependence on imports and create jobs in the defence sector.

What is the Importance of HAL Elcom Heron Mk2 Drone Deal

The Heron Mk2 drones are becoming a key part of India’s defence strategy.

Key Benefits:

  • Better surveillance along LAC (China) and LoC (Pakistan)
  • Long-duration missions without human risk
  • Real-time data for faster decision-making
  • Improved response to modern warfare threats

Drones have already changed global warfare dynamics, as seen in recent conflicts worldwide.

Future Outlook

India is also planning a larger UAV program:

  • Proposal to procure 87 MALE drones under Make in India
  • Project worth over ₹20,000 crore

This shows India’s long-term focus on becoming a drone-powered defence force.
