Visakhapatnam: In a testament to its growing expertise in maritime refit operations, Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) has successfully delivered the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Sarang after completing a Life Extension Refit (LER) — three days ahead of schedule.
The 27-year-old patrol vessel, which arrived at the shipyard on April 19, 2025, underwent a highly complex overhaul, ensuring it remains seaworthy and operational for years to come.
Expanded Scope, Efficient Execution
What makes the delivery noteworthy is that HSL completed 35% more work than originally planned. The additional scope involved sourcing a significant number of extra spares and executing advanced repairs—all without impacting the final delivery timeline.
The successful early handover was made possible through close coordination between HSL, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), and business partner Asha Engineering Works.
Major Works Completed
The refit was extensive and technical in nature, involving critical upgrades and overhauls across the vessel:
- Replacement of stern tube and ‘A’ bracket bearings
- Renewal of shaft tunnel hull boss plates — without removing the propeller shaft
- Installation of nine new pumps, followed by comprehensive trials
- Renewal of 12 tonnes of steel structures
- Overhaul of 140 motors, 300 valves, and 46 pumps
- Replacement of three kilometres of pipelines
Complete maintenance of machinery, air conditioning and refrigeration, fuel systems, and fire-fighting systems
Each of these upgrades enhances the ship’s reliability, safety, and performance at sea.
Demonstrating Refit Capabilities
HSL emphasized that this delivery showcases the shipyard’s growing prowess in executing complex refits with precision and speed. In a statement, the shipyard said:
“The early delivery of ICGS Sarang reflects HSL’s capability in handling complex refits, supported by our skilled manpower, robust project management, and effective stakeholder coordination.”
The successful delivery also aligns with the national goal of enhancing the maritime readiness of India’s coast guard and naval fleets through efficient PSU-led support.
