In a strategic move to strengthen India’s energy security and diversify its energy mix, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has signed its first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Trading Supply Agreement with ADNOC Trading, the commercial arm of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).
This landmark agreement will see LNG cargoes delivered to the newly commissioned Chhara LNG Terminal in Gujarat, operated by HPCL LNG Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of HPCL. The terminal, with a regasification capacity of 5 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and gross storage capacity of 400,000 cubic meters in two equal-sized tanks, will cater to HPCL’s captive demand and serve as a hub for marketing LNG to other downstream customers.
The deal marks a major milestone in HPCL’s expanding presence in the LNG value chain, as the energy major positions itself to play a pivotal role in delivering clean, reliable, and future-ready energy solutions aligned with India’s energy transition goals.
“This partnership with ADNOC Trading not only enables HPCL to secure long-term LNG supply but also reflects the deepening of economic and energy ties between India and the United Arab Emirates,” said an HPCL official. “LNG is central to our strategy of ensuring sustainable and diversified energy resources for India’s growing needs.”
The Chhara LNG Terminal, commissioned recently, is part of HPCL’s broader infrastructure investments to strengthen India’s natural gas ecosystem and support the government’s push toward increasing the share of natural gas in the energy mix from 6% to 15% by 2030.
ADNOC Trading’s role as a key supplier through this agreement highlights the UAE’s growing prominence as a strategic energy partner for India. It also represents a notable expansion of ADNOC’s trading footprint in South Asia.
