New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) will commence its participation in Exercise Pitch Black 2026, the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) premier biennial multinational air combat exercise, at RAAF Base Darwin from July 20 to August 7, 2026.

Held across the vast, sparsely populated regions of northern Australia, the exercise is recognised as one of the world’s largest multinational air warfare drills. Named after its emphasis on night flying operations, Exercise Pitch Black has evolved over its 45-year history into a major platform for enhancing international military cooperation and operational readiness.

Large-Scale Multinational Air Combat Exercise

This year’s edition features one of the largest-ever contingents of participating nations, bringing together military personnel and air assets from across the world for Large Force Employment (LFE) missions and complex multinational air combat operations.

The exercise offers participating air forces an opportunity to operate together in realistic combat scenarios, strengthening coordination, interoperability and tactical planning in a multinational environment.

IAF Deploys Rafale Fighters and Strategic Support Aircraft

The Indian Air Force contingent comprises highly trained Air Warriors, including pilots, engineers, technicians, air traffic controllers and other subject matter experts.

India will deploy:

  • Rafale multirole fighter aircraft
  • C-17 Globemaster III strategic transport aircraft
  • IL-78 Air-to-Air Refuelling aircraft

While the Rafale fighters will undertake frontline combat missions, the C-17 and IL-78 aircraft will provide strategic airlift and aerial refuelling support, enabling long-range expeditionary air operations.

Strengthening Interoperability in the Indo-Pacific

According to the IAF, Exercise Pitch Black 2026 will provide valuable opportunities to validate expeditionary air operations over extended distances while enhancing interoperability with friendly foreign air forces.

The exercise will also facilitate:

  • Exchange of operational best practices
  • Improved force integration
  • Enhanced multinational coordination
  • Stronger professional military partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region

Operating in a realistic multinational environment is expected to improve mutual understanding and strengthen operational synergy among participating nations.

India’s Continued Participation

The Indian Air Force has been a regular participant in recent editions of Exercise Pitch Black, having taken part in 2018, 2022 and 2024.

Its continued participation reflects India’s commitment to strengthening defence cooperation, improving joint operational capabilities and contributing to regional peace, stability and security in the Indo-Pacific.

With the deployment of advanced platforms such as the Rafale, the IAF is expected to further demonstrate its growing expeditionary capabilities while deepening strategic military engagement with partner nations.
