Strict Penalty Imposed on NHAI for Potholes on NH47
Ms. Sagar, currently serving as the Collector of Mahisagar district in Gujarat, came into the spotlight after she imposed a fine on an official of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The action was taken due to the large number of potholes found along NH47, which connects Ahmedabad to Godhra.
Under the Mahisagar Road Safety Committee campaign, Ms. Sagar implemented a daily fine of Rs. 500 from June 18 to July 7. She also fined the construction company responsible for the road and stated that the penalties would continue to rise until the potholes were fully repaired.
A First for Gujarat and a Wake-Up Call for Bureaucracy
With this move, Ms. Sagar became the first IAS officer in Gujarat to take such a bold stance against irregularities in road maintenance. Her action has not only brought relief to the public but has also sent a strong message to government departments that often treat such issues with indifference or formalities.
Her proactive approach comes at a time when the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, led by Union Minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari, has been facing mounting criticism over poor road conditions—particularly concerning the Jamnagar-Amritsar highway. Following this scrutiny, the Project Director of Palanpur was suspended, and the contractor was also penalized.
