New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the assignment of additional charge of Chairperson of the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) to Debashree Mukherjee, a 1991-batch IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre.

Mukherjee is currently serving as Secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and will hold the new role in addition to her existing responsibilities.

Tenure and Official Notification

According to the official notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on September 22, the additional charge will be effective from September 1, 2025, for a period of six months, or until a regular incumbent is appointed, or until further orders—whichever is earlier.

What is NCVET?

The National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) functions as the regulatory body for India’s vast and evolving skill development ecosystem. It plays a critical role in ensuring quality assurance and standardization across vocational education and training (VET) providers in the country.

Profile of Debashree Mukherjee

Debashree Mukherjee is an accomplished bureaucrat with a career spanning over three decades. Her wide-ranging administrative experience, leadership abilities, and policy-making skills make her an ideal choice for the NCVET leadership role.

Born on 19 November 1968 in Madhya Pradesh, Mukherjee has held several pivotal roles across the Indian bureaucracy. Her previous assignments include significant responsibilities in the Ministry of Jal Shakti, among others.

Academic Background

Debashree Mukherjee holds two distinguished academic degrees

  • M.A. in English Literature from Jawaharlal Nehru University (1989–1991)
  • M.Sc. in Water and Environmental Management from Loughborough University, UK (2009–2011)

She has also undergone international training programs that have enhanced her understanding of global best practices in governance and administration.

Known for her work in water resources management, Mukherjee has contributed to institutional reforms and capacity building in her various roles.
