Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology Patiala, on the occasion of its 35th convocation ceremony awarded an Honorary degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) to Municipal Commissioner of Greater Mumbai Mr. Iqbal Singh Chahal (IAS 1989) for his exemplary work during the Second wave of COVID19 pandemic. He is awarded on Monday for Covid19 management work in Mumbai as the Chief of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
Mr. Chahal is one and only Alumni of this institute, receiving the honor. Apart from him during 1994 to 2013, seven prominent personalities have been honored by TIET some of them are former PM Mr Manmohan Singh, former CM of Punjab Capt. Amrinder Singh, Co-founder of Infosys Nandan Nilekani, senior Journalist Shekhar Gupta etc.
Mr Chahal is a native of Joga Ralla village of Mansa and he graduated in Electronic and Communication Engineering from Thapar institute in the year 1987. In an official statement from the Institute, it is said that, “It was for honoring Chahal for his exceptional work as Municipal Commissioner of greater Mumbai in leading fight against 2nd wave of pandemic. Chahal contributed in restructuring the entire covid response mechanism in Mumbai, effectively managing the massive requirements of critical supplies in mega city. His decisive approach saved Mumbai from the large scale calamities due to covid19. In recognition of his commitment to social causes and exemplary contribution in the field, he is being awarded the degree of Doctor of Science (Honorary).”
