Patna: Celebrated UPSC CSE – 2020 topper and IAS officer Shubham Kumar tied the knot on June 1, 2025, in a private but much-discussed wedding ceremony held in Patna, Bihar. The marriage has drawn widespread attention, not just because of the groom’s fame as a civil services topper, but also due to the bride’s distinguished academic and administrative credentials.
A Union of Excellence: Meet the Bride, IRS Officer Priyangi Mehta
2021 batch IAS officer Mr Kumar’s wife, Priyangi Mehta, is also an accomplished officer. A native of Sandalpur in Patna City, Priyangi graduated from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and has an impressive academic background.
She secured the first rank in the 68th BPSC (Bihar Public Service Commission) examination and later cracked the UPSC CSE – 2023 exam with an All India Rank (AIR) of 261, joining the Indian Revenue Service (IRS).
This high-achieving officer couple has quickly become the talk of social media, with their wedding video and photos widely shared and praised.

IAS Shubham Kumar: Journey from Katihar to AIR 1
Shubham Kumar hails from Katihar district of Bihar and is a graduate of IIT Bombay. He began preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2018, though his first attempt was unsuccessful. In 2019, he secured AIR 290, and in 2020, he made history by topping the exam with AIR 1.
Currently serving as the Municipal Commissioner of Bhagalpur, Shubham previously served as the SDO of Barh (Patna district). His father, Devanand Singh, was a bank manager with North Bihar Gramin Bank, and his grandfather was a government school teacher – a family background steeped in education and public service.

The couple’s wedding was attended by close family and friends and reportedly honored by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who had previously congratulated Shubham after his UPSC success. The ceremony captured the attention of the public not just for its celebratory nature, but for the inspiring story of two bright minds joining hands.
