New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a six-month extension for Idashisha Nongrang (IPS: 1992: AM), the Director General of Police (DGP), Meghalaya, beyond her current tenure ending on May 19, 2026. Nongrang, the first woman and tribal officer to head the Meghalaya Police, initially took charge of the state police on May 20, 2024.
Historic First: Breaking Barriers in Northeast Policing
IPS Nongrang’s appointment marked a historic milestone for both Meghalaya and Northeast India. She became the first woman to assume the top post of any state police force in the region. Hailing from the Khasi community, one of Meghalaya’s three major tribal groups, Nongrang’s leadership represents a symbolic breakthrough for women and tribal communities in law enforcement.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma described her appointment as a moment of “immense pride,” highlighting its significance in a state traditionally dominated by matrilineal social structures, where women hold authority but remain underrepresented in top administrative and policing roles.
Rooted in Meghalaya: A Homegrown Leader
IPS Nongrang is not just a senior police officer; she is deeply familiar with the social, cultural, and geographic complexities of Meghalaya. Her local roots and long-standing service in the state have contributed to strong support from political parties, civil society, and community groups during her selection.
Her career trajectory includes –
- Director General of Meghalaya Civil Defence and Home Guards
- Special Director General of Meghalaya Police
- Acting DGP of Meghalaya in 2021
- Superintendent of Police (SP), East Khasi Hills
Her deep understanding of local policing challenges, law and order issues, and community relations was a key factor in her appointment.
Selection and Achievements
Ms Nongrang was selected from a shortlist of three candidates approved by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), and her appointment was recommended by the Meghalaya Security Commission. Her historic achievements include:
- First tribal woman DGP in Meghalaya and Northeast India
- Selection for the top post based on merit, experience, and community insight
- Recognized for fostering community trust and efficient administration
Priorities as Meghalaya’s Police Chief
During her tenure, Nongrang has outlined key areas of focus –
- Enhancing women’s safety across urban and rural areas
- Improving traffic management in the state’s growing towns and cities
- Combating cybercrime amid increasing digital adoption
- Strengthening community policing and building trust across ethnic groups
Her approach emphasizes a balance between firm law enforcement and community engagement—a crucial strategy in a diverse state like Meghalaya.
A Distinguished Police Career
An IPS officer of the Assam–Meghalaya cadre, Nongrang has earned respect for her calm and efficient leadership over decades of service. She has handled key roles in administration and policing, including a brief stint as acting DGP in 2021, and has steadily risen through the ranks to become one of the most senior women officers in the region.
A Symbolic Breakthrough
Ms Nongrang’s leadership is more than a personal achievement; it is a reflection of changing times in Indian policing. Her appointment demonstrates that competence, experience, and dedication are increasingly overcoming traditional barriers of gender and ethnicity in the higher echelons of law enforcement.
As Meghalaya’s police chief, her extended tenure will continue to inspire young women and tribal youth, showcasing the possibilities of leadership through quiet determination and committed service.
