New Delhi: In a diplomatic development reflecting India’s growing engagement with Latin America, Mr Ajaneesh Kumar, currently serving as the Ambassador of India to Argentina, has been concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Wednesday.
Mr Kumar, A 1996-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), will continue to reside in Buenos Aires, Argentina’s capital, and will handle responsibilities for both countries from there.
A Career Diplomat with Global Experience
Mr Kumar brings with him a wealth of diplomatic experience spanning nearly three decades. He has served in various capacities at Indian missions around the world, including postings in Mexico, Argentina, Switzerland, Ghana, Brunei, and Estonia, apart from several strategic divisions at MEA headquarters in New Delhi.
Notably, he was India’s first resident Ambassador to Estonia and has previously served as High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam.

Diplomatic Context: Strengthening Ties with Uruguay
Kumar’s concurrent accreditation comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 7, 2025. The two leaders discussed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and expressed a strong interest in expanding the India–MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement, aiming to deepen economic ties.

As part of his recent five-nation tour, Prime Minister Modi also visited Argentina, where he was honored with the Key to the City of Buenos Aires by Jorge Macri, Chief of the City Government. These high-level engagements underscore India’s increasing diplomatic and trade focus in South America.
