Dispur: Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) has inaugurated a Compressor House and Control Room at its Despatch Terminal (DT) in Baihata, Assam, marking a significant milestone in the development of the North East Gas Grid (NEGG).
Jayanta Narayan Das, Member of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), inaugurated the facility on October 10. The newly commissioned infrastructure is expected to strengthen natural gas transmission capabilities in the North-Eastern region by improving pipeline operations, pressure management and real-time monitoring.
The facility will support the reliable and efficient operation of the integrated gas transmission network, contributing to the expansion of natural gas infrastructure across the region.
IGGL’s Baihata Facility to Strengthen Natural Gas Transmission
The inauguration of the Compressor House and Control Room marks another step in IGGL’s efforts to develop critical energy infrastructure in the North-East.
The compressor facility will help maintain the required pressure for transporting natural gas through long-distance pipelines. During transmission, pressure losses can affect the movement of gas, making compressor infrastructure essential for efficient pipeline operations. The associated control room will enable operational monitoring and oversight of the transmission system. It is expected to support improved system management, enhance operational efficiency and strengthen the reliability of the gas transportation network.
Together, these facilities will play an important role in supporting the operation of the North East Gas Grid.

North East Gas Grid to Connect All Eight States
The North East Gas Grid is envisaged as an extensive natural gas pipeline network connecting all eight states of the North-Eastern region.
The project aims to improve regional gas connectivity by linking natural gas supply sources with consumption centres. This infrastructure is expected to support the wider availability of natural gas and create opportunities for industrial development across the region.
By expanding pipeline connectivity, the gas grid is intended to strengthen the regional energy supply network and support industries that depend on natural gas as a fuel or feedstock. The Baihata facility is part of the broader effort to establish reliable gas transmission infrastructure and improve connectivity across the North-East.
Natural Gas Infrastructure to Support Industrial Development
The expansion of the North East Gas Grid is expected to benefit several industrial sectors, subject to gas availability and downstream connectivity.
Key sectors that could benefit from improved natural gas access include:
- Refineries: Supporting industrial energy requirements and relevant processing operations.
- Fertiliser plants: Providing natural gas as an important industrial feedstock.
- Tea processing: Supporting energy requirements in the region’s tea industry.
- Manufacturing: Improving access to natural gas for industrial operations.
- City Gas Distribution (CGD): Supporting the expansion of gas distribution networks for eligible consumers and businesses.
Improved gas connectivity could help industries access a more reliable energy supply while supporting regional economic activity. However, the extent of these benefits will depend on the availability of gas supplies and the development of downstream infrastructure.
IGGL Focuses on Regional Energy Security and Connectivity
The inauguration of the Baihata Compressor House and Control Room represents an important development in the expansion of natural gas transmission infrastructure in the North-Eastern region.
A reliable gas pipeline network can help connect energy supply sources with industrial and commercial demand centres. Such connectivity is expected to contribute to regional energy security, support industrial competitiveness and create opportunities for long-term economic development.
As the North-East gains greater prominence in India’s energy landscape, investments in natural gas infrastructure are expected to support a more diversified energy mix and improve access to cleaner-burning fuels.
The Baihata facility will support IGGL’s efforts to strengthen pipeline operations and advance the development of the North East Gas Grid.
