In Record 20 Days, GRSE Launches India’s First 280-Foot Modular Double Lane Bridge in High-Altitude Ladakh

GRSE sets a record by building India's first 280-foot modular double lane steel bridge in Ladakh in just 20 days.

LadakhGarden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a premier defence PSU under the Ministry of Defence, has set a new benchmark in infrastructure engineering with the launch of India’s first-ever Multi-Span Double Lane Modular Steel Bridge. The 280-foot bridge, built in a record time of just 20 days, was inaugurated on July 10, 2025, at KM 72.625 on the Phobrang-Marshimik-La Hot-Spring Road in Ladakh.

The newly launched bridge, consisting of two 140-foot spans, has been officially handed over to Project Himank of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Constructed at a high-altitude location under extreme weather conditions, the project reinforces India’s defence logistics and connectivity infrastructure in one of its most strategically important regions.

Engineering Feat in Extreme Terrain

This is the first time a modular double-lane steel bridge of this scale has been deployed in such a challenging terrain in India. GRSE completed the project in just 20 days despite the harsh climatic conditions and remote location. The bridge is expected to significantly improve the movement of troops and equipment, strengthening India’s border infrastructure.

With a carriageway width of 7.5 meters, the bridge enables smooth two-way traffic and complies with Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) standards. The structure is made using high tensile E-410 grade steel, offering strength, durability, and reliability in low temperatures. The galvanized finish provides resistance to corrosion and ensures a long service life.

Supporting Atmanirbhar Bharat

GRSE’s innovation aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. The bridge is entirely indigenously designed and developed. Under a memorandum of understanding with BRO, GRSE has already supplied 56 modular steel bridges across India.

Designed for load class IRC 70R, the bridge can carry wheeled vehicles up to 100 metric tonnes and tracked vehicles up to 70 metric tonnes. Its modular concept allows easier transport of components and accelerated installation timelines, typically within 30 to 45 days.

GRSE’s Rising Footprint in Modular Bridge Development

GRSE has carved a niche in the defence and civil infrastructure sectors with its Portable Steel Bridge Division. In August 2022, GRSE became the only Indian organisation to earn the Green Channel Certification from the Indian Army for Portable Steel Bridges (Bailey Type).

So far, GRSE has delivered over 5,900 portable steel bridges to various agencies including the Indian Army, BRO, NHIDCL, state PWDs, and several other government departments. These bridges, originally developed for disaster response, have also found applications in long-term infrastructure development and international markets.

International Reach and Recognition

Beyond Indian borders, GRSE has exported modular steel bridges to countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka. Its emphasis on research and development has enabled the creation of next-generation designs for field use and rapid deployment.

With this landmark project in Ladakh, GRSE continues to redefine engineering innovation for critical national needs—ensuring not just speed and strength, but also sustainable and self-reliant development.
