New Delhi: Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia assumed charge as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) of the Eastern Air Command (EAC) of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on February 1, 2026. He succeeds Air Marshal Surat Singh, who superannuated on January 31, 2026, after rendering 39 years of distinguished service to the nation.

The appointment marks a significant leadership transition at one of the Indian Air Force’s most strategically critical commands, responsible for safeguarding India’s eastern airspace and overseeing operations along sensitive international borders.

Distinguished Academic and Early Career Background

Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA) and was commissioned into the Fighter stream of the Indian Air Force on June 11, 1988. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he has built a reputation as a highly accomplished fighter pilot, operational commander, and strategic leader.

Extensive Flying Experience Across Multiple Fighter Platforms

The Air Marshal is qualified on all variants of MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-27, Jaguar, and Su-30 MKI aircraft. He has logged over 3,200 hours of accident- and incident-free flying, reflecting exceptional professionalism and operational expertise.

He is a Fighter Strike Leader and an Instrument Rating Instructor & Examiner (IRIE), credentials that underline his deep involvement in both operational flying and training roles within the IAF.

Key Command and Operational Appointments

Throughout his illustrious career, Air Marshal Walia has held several important command, staff, and instructional appointments, including:

  • Commanding Officer of a MiG-27 Squadron
  • Commandant of the Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE), the IAF’s premier tactical training institution
  • Air Officer Commanding of a frontline airbase
  • Air Defence Commander, Headquarters Western Air Command
  • Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO), Headquarters Eastern Air Command (immediately prior to his current appointment)

These roles have provided him with extensive exposure to both tactical-level operations and higher command responsibilities.

Strategic, Training and International Exposure

Air Marshal Walia has also made significant contributions in policy, inspection, and training domains. His key staff appointments include:

  • Air Commodore, Directorate of Air Staff Inspection (DASI)
  • Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Training) at Air Headquarters
  • Defence Attaché at the Indian Embassies in Japan and South Korea

His international exposure and diplomatic assignments have strengthened India’s defence cooperation with key strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

Advanced Professional Military Education

The Air Officer has undergone advanced professional military education, including:

  • Advanced Command & Staff Course, United Kingdom
  • National Defence College (NDC), Bangladesh

These courses have further sharpened his strategic outlook and leadership capabilities at the highest levels of military command.

In recognition of his distinguished and exemplary service, Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia has been awarded:

  • Vayu Sena Medal (VM) in 2008
  • Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2018
