New Delhi: In a landmark move towards achieving artificial intelligence sovereignty, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced that India has successfully deployed 38,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) at an unprecedented affordable rate of ₹65 per hour.

The infrastructure is currently powering 12 Indian companies developing indigenous foundation models, with the country’s first national Large Language Model set to launch by the end of 2025.

India AI Mission GPUs: Frugal Innovation Meets Global Ambition

The announcement came during pre-summit events for the upcoming India-AI Impact Summit 2026, held at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025 in New Delhi on October 10.

Secretary MeitY, Shri S. Krishnan, highlighted India’s unique approach: “We have adopted innovative means by learning from the experiences of others to build viable projects and products that will truly make a difference for us. In partnership with the private sector, accessible to the public sector – ensuring a level-playing field for all providers, is both innovative and frugal.”

The model has attracted international attention, with several global agencies exploring its replicability for the Global South.

India AI Mission GPUs: Breaking the Foreign AI Dependency

Additional Secretary MeitY, CEO IndiaAI and Director General NIC, Shri Abhishek Singh, announced the ambitious timeline:

The Government’s IndiaAI Mission, approved last year, is addressing key gaps by enabling affordable compute, creating a national data platform, supporting foundation models, advancing AI skilling, and ensuring safe and trustworthy AI.

Today, with 38,000 GPUs available at just ₹65 per hour and 12 companies developing foundation models, we envision to launch an Indian Large Language Model by year-end, reducing dependence on foreign systems.”

This development marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward technological self-sufficiency in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

India AI Mission GPUs: AI Transforming Telecom Infrastructure

COO IndiaAI Mission and Scientist G MeitY, Smt. Kavita Bhatia, emphasized the critical role of AI in telecommunications: “AI in telecom holds immense potential. It can ensure reliable connectivity in rural areas, enhance resilience against network disruptions, and power new services across various sectors, including financial inclusion.”

She stressed the importance of trustworthy AI frameworks as artificial intelligence becomes deeply embedded in spectrum management, predictive maintenance, customer engagement, and fraud detection systems.

India AI Mission GPUs: Four Critical Panels Shape AI Roadmap

The pre-summit featured four high-level panel discussions that explored India’s comprehensive AI strategy:

AI in Telecom for Social and Economic Impact– Examining how AI can revolutionize telecom infrastructure, connectivity, and service delivery for citizens and businesses.

Building Trustworthy AI in Telecom– Discussing frameworks and collaborations for safe, transparent, and people-centric AI adoption.

Building India’s AI Workforce Advantage– Strategizing the development of an inclusive and future-ready AI talent ecosystem.

AI for Inclusive Growth and Social Empowerment- Highlighting AI-driven innovation for advancing equity and social good.

Industry Giants Join the AI Movement

The events witnessed robust participation from senior government officials and industry leaders representing Reliance Jio, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tanla Platforms, BharatGPT-Corover.ai, Amazon Web Services (AWS), AMD, C-Dot, BITS Pilani, Google, Airtel, Netweb Technologies, UNESCO, Truminds Software Systems, and Microsoft, among others.

India-AI Impact Summit 2026: A Global Platform

The India-AI Impact Summit 2026, scheduled for February 19-20, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, will convene global leaders to advance responsible AI design, development, and deployment, guided by three core principles: People, Planet, and Progress.

The Summit will operate through seven thematic “Chakras” encompassing Human Capital, Inclusion for Social Empowerment, Safe and Trusted AI, Resilience, Innovation & Efficiency, Science, and AI for Economic Growth & Social Good.

Three Sutras Guide of India AI Mission GPUs

The Summit framework rests on three foundational principles:

People:  AI must serve humanity’s diversity, respecting cultural identities, preserving dignity, and ensuring inclusive development through multilingual and accessible systems.

Planet: AI development must be resource-efficient while accelerating climate resilience, environmental protection, and scientific discoveries aligned with global sustainability goals.

Progress: Ensuring equitable distribution of AI benefits by democratizing access to datasets, compute resources, and models, with applications spanning healthcare, education, governance, and agriculture.

India AI Mission GPUs: Making AI Work for the Many

The India AI Mission represents a paradigm shift in how emerging economies approach advanced technology adoption.

By making powerful computing resources available at affordable rates, India is enabling startups, researchers, and enterprises to compete globally while developing solutions tailored to local challenges.

The ₹65 per hour GPU pricing stands in stark contrast to international rates, making AI development accessible to a broader ecosystem of innovators.

This democratized approach could accelerate AI applications in critical sectors like agriculture, healthcare, education, and public governance.

India AI Mission GPUs: Path to Technological Sovereignty

The development of an indigenous Large Language Model by December 2025 represents more than technological achievement—it’s a strategic move toward digital sovereignty.

Having domestic AI capabilities reduces dependence on foreign technologies while ensuring data security and cultural relevance in AI applications.

With 12 companies actively developing foundation models using the IndiaAI infrastructure, the country is fostering a competitive ecosystem that could produce world-class AI solutions tailored to Indian languages, contexts, and challenges.

As India positions itself as a global convener for AI governance, particularly for the Global South, the IndiaAI Mission exemplifies how thoughtful policy, frugal innovation, and inclusive growth can create sustainable technology ecosystems.

The pre-summit events have set a promising tone for the India-AI Impact Summit 2026, where the world will witness India’s blueprint for making AI a force for equitable progress and sustainable development.
