New Delhi: Indigenous 1000-kg aerial bombs for IAF have become a major focus as India moves ahead with defence self-reliance. The Ministry of Defence has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) to develop and procure these heavy bombs domestically.
This step is part of the government’s push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing. The project aims to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthen the striking capability of the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Details of the Indigenous 1000-kg Aerial Bombs
The Ministry of Defence has officially invited Indian companies to participate in the design, development, and production of 1,000-kg class aerial bombs similar to the widely used Mk-84.

- Around 600 bombs will be procured under this program
- The project follows the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020
- It will be executed under the Make-II (industry-funded) category
- Final procurement will be done under Buy (Indian-IDDM)
This clearly shows the government’s intention to promote indigenous defence manufacturing.
Two-Phase Development Plan
1. Design & Development Phase
- Development of six prototypes (live and inert)
- Includes tail units and associated equipment
- Trials such as single-stage composite trials (SSCT) will be conducted
2. Procurement Phase
- A Request for Proposal (RFP) will be issued
- Only qualified agencies will be selected for bulk production
The total project timeline is estimated to be around 2.5 years from EoI to final contract signing.
What are the Features of the Indigenous 1000-kg Aerial Bombs
- Weight: 1,000 kg class (heavy bomb)
- Type: General-purpose, high-calibre munition
- Effect:
- High blast impact
- Strong fragmentation
- Significant over-pressure against targets
These bombs are expected to enhance the IAF’s capability to strike hardened and strategic targets effectively.
Compatibility with IAF Aircraft
One of the major advantages of this project is flexibility.
- Compatible with Russian-origin aircraft (like Su-30MKI)
- Compatible with Western-origin aircraft (like Mirage, Jaguar)
This ensures seamless integration into the existing IAF fleet without major modifications.
Push for Indigenous Defence (Aatmanirbhar Bharat)
Currently, India imports Mk-84 class bombs from foreign manufacturers.
With this initiative:
- At least 50% indigenous content is mandatory
- Indian private companies can participate
- Foreign collaboration is allowed but with strict indigenous requirements
This move is expected to:
- Reduce import dependency
- Boost domestic defence industry
- Create new opportunities for Indian manufacturers
Indigenous 1000-kg Aerial Bombs : Trials and Evaluation Process
- Testing will be conducted within India
- Trials will be carried out on IAF aircraft platforms
- Evaluation will be based on:
- Technical capability
- Infrastructure
- Indigenous content
- Financial criteria
This ensures only capable and reliable firms are selected.
