Shirdi: India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem is expanding rapidly as private companies increase investment in advanced military technologies. The newly inaugurated Defence Manufacturing Complex of NIBE Limited in Shirdi, Maharashtra, is being seen as a major step toward strengthening India’s “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” goals. 

The facility will focus on artillery systems, missile technologies, rocket launchers, drones, space technologies, and autonomous defence platforms.

What Is The New NIBE Defence Manufacturing Complex?

The new defence complex has been developed by NIBE at Shirdi MIDC in Maharashtra.

Key highlights of the project:

  • Spread across nearly 200 acres
  • Focus on indigenous defence manufacturing
  • Designed for advanced artillery shell production
  • Will manufacture drones, rocket launchers, missile systems, and defence platforms
  • Supports India’s self-reliance mission in defence production
  • Expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs

According to reports, the facility can manufacture nearly five lakh artillery shell hardware units annually, making it one of the largest private-sector defence manufacturing projects in India.

Rajnath Singh Inaugurates The NIBE Defence Manufacturing Complex

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the defence manufacturing complex on May 23, 2026.

The event was attended by:

  • Anil Chauhan
  • Senior defence officials
  • MSME representatives
  • Industry experts and innovators

During the inauguration, advanced indigenous defence systems including rocket launchers and kamikaze drones were showcased.

Key Focus Areas of NIBE Defence Manufacturing Complex

The Shirdi facility aims to develop and manufacture:

  • Advanced artillery systems
  • Missile and space technologies
  • Guided rocket systems
  • Long-range launcher systems
  • Autonomous defence platforms
  • Kamikaze drones
  • Energetic materials and ammunition systems

The company is also working on advanced rocket systems with ranges of 100 km, 300 km, and even 1,000 km.

Suryastra Rocket System Adds Momentum

The development comes shortly after successful demonstrations of the “Suryastra” rocket system by NIBE.

  • 150 km and 300 km range variants tested
  • Trials conducted at Chandipur, Odisha
  • Designed for precision long-range strikes
  • Linked to Indian Army procurement programs

The successful test is being viewed as a major achievement for India’s indigenous long-range strike capability.
