New Delhi: India has taken a major step toward advanced maritime technology with the launch of the world’s first autonomous ship hub in Andhra Pradesh.

The project aims to transform the country’s shipbuilding and maritime systems using artificial intelligence, automation, and advanced research facilities. The new centre will support ship manufacturing, maintenance, and innovation under one integrated ecosystem.

Developed by Sagar Defence Engineering and backed by the Andhra Pradesh government, the initiative highlights India’s growing focus on self-reliance in defence and maritime technology. The hub is expected to strengthen India’s position in the global maritime industry while supporting modern naval capabilities and commercial shipping.

Details of Autonomous Ship Hub

India has begun construction of the world’s first Autonomous Maritime Shipbuilding and Systems Centre.

The facility will be located at Juvvaladinne harbour in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh, covering an area of nearly 29.58 acres.

The project is being developed by Sagar Defence Engineering, a Mumbai-based defence technology company that focuses on autonomous maritime systems.

The foundation stone for the centre was laid on 12 March 2026, in the presence of Andhra Pradesh HRD Minister Nara Lokesh.

Officials say the project reflects India’s growing ambition to become a global hub for maritime innovation and advanced shipbuilding technologies.

Autonomous Ship Hub: A Complete Ecosystem for Future Ships

The new autonomous ship hub will function as a one-stop ecosystem for maritime engineering and innovation.

Key facilities planned in the centre include:

  • Research and development labs for autonomous maritime systems
  • AI-driven manufacturing units
  • Ship repair and maintenance facilities
  • Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) infrastructure
  • Advanced testing and engineering labs

This integrated setup will help accelerate the development of next-generation autonomous vessels, which can operate with minimal human intervention.

Role of Artificial Intelligence and Automation in Maritime Sector

A major highlight of the project is the integration of AI-based manufacturing and automation technologies.

These technologies will help:

  • Design smart autonomous ships
  • Improve shipbuilding efficiency
  • Reduce production time and costs
  • Enhance maritime safety and navigation systems

Autonomous maritime vessels are considered the future of global shipping, as they can operate more efficiently and safely than conventional ships.

Importance of Autonomous Ship Hub

The new shipbuilding hub is expected to support both defence and commercial maritime industries.

Key benefits include:

1. Strengthening Defence Capabilities

Autonomous ships and maritime systems can play an important role in surveillance, logistics, and naval operations.

2. Promoting Indigenous Innovation

The project supports India’s “Make in India” and defence self-reliance goals by building advanced technologies within the country.

3. Creating a Maritime Technology Cluster

The centre may attract startups, researchers, and defence technology companies to collaborate on future maritime solutions.

4. Job Creation and Local Development

The facility is expected to generate employment and boost economic activity in Andhra Pradesh’s coastal region.

Why Autonomous Ships Matter

Autonomous maritime vessels are becoming a major focus for countries investing in future naval technology.

These ships can:

  • Navigate using AI and advanced sensors
  • Operate without full human crews
  • Conduct long-distance missions
  • Improve maritime logistics and safety

Many global naval forces are already exploring autonomous ships for surveillance, reconnaissance, and unmanned operations.

India’s new hub could therefore place the country among the global leaders in maritime autonomy technologies.

Strategic Significance for India

India has one of the longest coastlines in the world and depends heavily on maritime trade.

Developing advanced shipbuilding technology will help the country:

  • Strengthen maritime security in the Indian Ocean
  • Improve naval technological capabilities
  • Expand India’s presence in the global shipbuilding market

Experts believe projects like this will help India emerge as a major player in future maritime technologies.
