New Delhi: India is moving closer to a historic India-Germany submarine deal worth around ₹99,000 crore, aimed at acquiring six advanced Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) submarines for the Indian Navy. The project, known as Project-75I, is expected to significantly strengthen India’s underwater warfare capabilities and modernise the Navy’s submarine fleet.

The submarines will be built in India with German technology and are designed to stay underwater longer and operate more quietly than conventional submarines. Defence experts say the deal will enhance India’s maritime security in the Indian Ocean region, where strategic competition with China and Pakistan has been increasing.

What Is the India-Germany Submarine Deal?

The proposed deal involves six next-generation diesel-electric submarines equipped with AIP technology developed by German defence company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).

The programme is part of Project-75I, a long-running Indian Navy initiative aimed at building modern stealth submarines with advanced combat systems. The total cost of the project is estimated at around $8–10 billion (₹70,000–₹99,000 crore), making it one of the largest defence procurement programmes in India’s history.

Under the plan:

  • Six submarines will be constructed in India
  • German technology and design will be used
  • Indian shipyards will handle manufacturing
  • Technology transfer will help strengthen domestic defence production

This aligns with India’s “Make in India” and defence indigenisation goals.

What Is Project-75I?

Project-75I is the second phase of India’s submarine modernisation programme.

The project aims to build advanced stealth submarines that can operate silently, stay underwater for long durations, and launch sophisticated weapons. These submarines will complement the Scorpène-class submarines already in service with the Indian Navy.

Key objectives of Project-75I include:

  • Enhancing underwater combat capabilities
  • Strengthening deterrence in the Indian Ocean
  • Expanding India’s submarine fleet
  • Increasing indigenous manufacturing capability

The programme has faced delays for several years due to technical requirements and procurement procedures.

Why AIP Technology Is Important

The Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system is the most important feature of these submarines.

Traditional diesel-electric submarines must regularly surface to recharge batteries, which makes them easier to detect. AIP technology solves this problem.

Advantages of AIP submarines

  • Stay underwater for weeks instead of days
  • Produce less noise, making them harder to detect
  • Improve stealth and combat endurance
  • Allow longer patrol missions

Because of these capabilities, AIP submarines are considered a major upgrade for modern naval warfare.

Role of German Technology

Germany’s TKMS submarine design, such as the Type-214 or next-generation variants, is known for advanced stealth and endurance.

These submarines typically feature:

  • Displacement of around 2,500 tonnes
  • Advanced sonar and combat systems
  • Long-range torpedoes and missile capability
  • AIP technology for extended underwater operations

The German platform was selected after competing with other international submarine designs due to its proven AIP technology and operational reliability.

Construction in India

The submarines are expected to be built in partnership with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.

The collaboration will combine:

  • German engineering and design expertise
  • Indian manufacturing capability

This will allow India to gain technology transfer, manufacturing experience, and local defence ecosystem growth.

The move is expected to support India’s long-term goal of building complex naval platforms domestically.

India Germany Submarine Deal: Delivery Timeline

Once the contract is signed and production begins, the submarines will take several years to build.

Expected timeline:

  • First submarine delivery: around 2032–2033
  • Remaining submarines delivered annually afterward
  • Entire fleet of six submarines expected by around 2036

Submarine construction is complex and typically takes 7–10 years due to advanced technology integration.

What is the Importance of India Germany Submarine Deal

The deal is strategically important for India’s maritime security.

Key strategic reasons

1. Countering regional threats

China has expanded its naval presence in the Indian Ocean, while Pakistan continues to upgrade its submarine fleet.

2. Strengthening deterrence

Advanced stealth submarines improve India’s ability to monitor sea lanes and deter adversaries.

3. Protecting maritime trade routes

India depends heavily on sea trade routes for energy imports and commerce.

4. Expanding naval power projection

Modern submarines enhance India’s role as a major maritime power in the Indo-Pacific region.

Experts say the deal will significantly enhance India’s undersea warfare capability.

Boost for India-Germany Strategic Partnership

The submarine agreement is also expected to strengthen India-Germany defence cooperation.

Germany has been expanding its security partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region, and collaboration with India reflects growing strategic alignment.

The project includes:

  • Technology transfer
  • Training and maintenance support
  • Long-term defence collaboration

Such partnerships help India access advanced military technologies while strengthening diplomatic relations.
