Mumbai: The Indian Navy is set to commission Mahe, the first of the Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, on 24th November 2025. Built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (CSL), Kochi, Mahe represents a major milestone in indigenous naval shipbuilding under India’s Make in India initiative.
Mahe: A Leap in Indigenous Naval Capability
The Mahe-class ASW-SWC is designed for agility, precision, and endurance in littoral zones. Compact yet powerful, the ship combines stealth, firepower, and mobility to track submarines, conduct coastal patrols, and secure India’s strategic maritime approaches. With over 80 percent indigenous content, the vessel reflects India’s growing expertise in warship design, construction, and systems integration.
Named after the historic coastal town of Mahe on the Malabar Coast, the ship’s crest features an Urumi, a flexible sword from the martial art Kalaripayattu, symbolizing agility, precision, and lethal grace. The commissioning of Mahe marks the arrival of a new generation of indigenous shallow-water combatants that are sleek, swift, and resolutely Indian.
Strategic and Operational Significance
The commissioning of Mahe significantly enhances the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities in shallow waters. It strengthens coastal security, maritime surveillance, and quick-response operations against underwater threats. Mahe and subsequent ships in the class will provide the Navy with a modern, locally-built platform capable of both defensive and offensive maritime roles.
Strengthening India’s Naval Defense Ecosystem
The Mahe-class project exemplifies the synergy between Indian public sector shipyards and advanced naval technology. It supports employment, skill development, and technological self-reliance in the defense manufacturing sector, aligning with India’s broader strategic and industrial objectives.
Cochin Shipyard: A Leading Public Sector Undertaking
