New Delhi: The Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) programme received a major push as a new warship, Yard 1280, was launched at Goa Shipyard Limited in Vasco Da Gama, Goa. The Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) is part of India’s indigenous defence initiative aimed at strengthening coastal security, surveillance, and anti-piracy operations. 

Built under the “Make in India” vision, these vessels are designed using advanced technology and modern systems.

The vessel was launched at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), one of India’s leading defence shipbuilders. The event took place in Vasco Da Gama, Goa, and is part of a larger project involving multiple NGOPVs being built for the Indian Navy.

The launch of Yard 1280 highlights India’s growing capability in indigenous warship construction and reflects strong progress in naval modernization.

  • Capability to operate helicopters

They are designed to significantly improve India’s maritime domain awareness.

The NGOPV project is a large-scale defence programme.

  • Built by:
    • Goa Shipyard Limited (7 ships)
    • Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (4 ships)

The contracts were signed in March 2023, showing India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
