New Delhi: India has achieved a significant milestone in its energy sector, as the country’s coal production for the financial year 2024-25 crossed the 1-billion tonne (BT) mark for the first time in history. According to the Ministry of Coal, the cumulative coal production reached 1,047.57 million tonnes (MT) (provisional), surpassing last year’s total of 997.83 MT, reflecting a growth of 4.99 percent.
The ministry attributed this achievement to the relentless efforts to boost production, streamline dispatches, and strengthen the nation’s energy security. The remarkable growth in coal production has been driven by both commercial and captive entities, with their production reaching 197.50 MT (provisional), marking a significant 28.11 percent increase compared to the 154.16 MT recorded in the previous year.
Coal Dispatches Also Hit New High
In a parallel achievement, coal dispatches for FY 2024-25 have also exceeded the 1-billion tonne milestone, reaching 1,024.99 MT (provisional), compared to 973.01 MT in FY 2023-24, reflecting a growth of 5.34 percent. Dispatches from commercial, captive, and other entities surged to 196.83 MT (provisional), showing a remarkable 31.39 percent increase over last year’s total of 149.81 MT.
The ministry emphasized that these milestones reflect India’s progress in increasing domestic coal production while ensuring efficient distribution to meet growing energy demands. This achievement underscores the country’s focus on achieving self-reliance in coal production, reducing import dependency, and driving sustainable mining practices.
The Ministry of Coal remains committed to strengthening India’s energy security and economic resilience by focusing on continuous improvements in the coal sector, as the nation looks to further enhance its production capacity and efficiency in the coming years.
