India’s iron ore production rose by 4.3% in the financial year 2024-25, reaching 289 million tonnes (MT), up from 277 MT in 2023-24, according to a statement from the Ministry of Mines.
The ministry noted that the steady growth in iron ore output reflects strong demand in the steel industry, which is the primary consumer of this raw material. India is currently the fourth-largest producer of iron ore globally. Alongside iron ore, manganese ore production also registered growth, increasing from 3.4 MT in 2023-24 to 3.8 MT in 2024-25.
In the non-ferrous sector, primary aluminium production rose slightly, from 41.6 lakh tonnes (LT) in 2023-24 to 42 LT last fiscal. Meanwhile, refined copper production witnessed a 12.6% increase, climbing from 5.09 LT to 5.73 LT in the same period.
India ranks as the second-largest aluminium producer globally and remains among the top ten in refined copper production.
