Agra: India’s defence manufacturing took a major leap forward as India advanced parachute system developed by Gliders India Limited (GIL) was successfully validated through high-altitude live jumps on 20 February 2026. The milestone event at the Malpura Drop Zone in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India confirmed the parachute’s operational reliability, marking a significant step in strengthening airborne capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces.
Details of Indigenous Advanced Parachute System
On 20 February 2026, two fully certified advanced parachute systems were dropped from high altitude during live trials conducted at the Malpura Drop Zone in Agra.
The systems had already received rigorous clearance from:
- Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC), RCMA Kanpur
- Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA)
Officials from GIL, the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), DGAQA Kanpur, and the Indian Air Force (IAF) attended the event, highlighting a strong collaborative effort from India’s defence ecosystem.
Technical Excellence: Multiple Deployment Modes
What makes this advanced parachute system stand out is its versatile design capable of operating across a wide range of altitudes — from low-altitude tactical insertions to extreme high-altitude missions.
This adaptability enables its use in diverse operational environments, including:
- Mountainous regions along India’s northern borders
- Rapid airborne insertions for special forces
- Precision supply drops in challenging terrain
Test jumpers Wg Cdr Rahul Jha and MWO R J Singh from ADRDE executed the high-altitude drops with precision, confirming the system’s tactical effectiveness and safety.
About Gliders India Limited
Gliders India Limited (GIL) is a state-owned defense Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) headquartered in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, established in 2021 following the corporatization of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB). The company specializes in the manufacture of a wide range of military and specialized parachutes, including man-carrying, brake parachutes for fighter jets (like the Su-30MKI), and supply drop systems. Beyond parachutes, it also produces inflatable boats, floats, and technical textile equipment for the Indian Armed Forces and international markets.
Importance of Indigenous Advanced Parachute System
This milestone aligns with India’s broader self-reliance goals under initiatives like Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. By reducing dependence on foreign imports and promoting domestic manufacturing, the advanced parachute system strengthens India’s defence manufacturing base. GIL’s success reinforces its mission to deliver high-performance, reliable airborne systems for the Indian Armed Forces.
