ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT — Indian Naval sail training ship INS Sudarshini arrived at the historic port city of Alexandria on March 1, 2026, after successfully completing a milestone northbound transit through the strategic Suez Canal under its ongoing transoceanic expedition Lokayan-26. This arrival marks a major operational and training achievement for the vessel and its trainees while reinforcing India’s maritime outreach initiative.

INS Sudarshini, a three-masted barque of the Indian Navy, sailed through the 193-kilometre Suez Canal — a vital maritime gateway that links the Red Sea with the Mediterranean and connects East with West.

Upon arrival, INS Sudarshini was welcomed by senior officials of the Egyptian Navy and representatives from the Indian Embassy. The Commanding Officer of the ship paid a courtesy call to Rear Admiral Mahmoud Abdelsattar, Commander of the Alexandria Naval Base, underlining strong naval cooperation and mutual respect.

Lokayan-26, the ten-month expedition launched from Kochi, India, is intended to cover over 22,000 nautical miles, with visits to approximately 18 ports across 13 countries. The programme combines traditional sailing training with India’s strategic naval diplomacy, showcasing Indian maritime heritage and fostering international cooperation across oceans.
