New Delhi: In a key central deputation move, Karnataka-cadre IPS officer Anupam Agrawal (2008 batch) has been appointed as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The appointment was approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on September 9, 2025, against an existing vacancy. Agrawal is to be relieved from his current role immediately to assume his new assignment at the Centre.
Previous Roles and Career Highlights
Before this appointment, Agrawal was serving as DIG, Economic Offences Wing (EOW), CID, Karnataka, where he handled complex financial crime investigations and contributed significantly to strengthening law enforcement mechanisms in the state. He has also previously held positions such as Commissioner of Police, Mangaluru City, where he was recognized for his effective leadership in urban policing and maintaining law and order.
Strategic Importance of the Appointment
- Transition to National Security Domain: Moving from state-level policing to the CRPF, a key paramilitary force responsible for internal security, counter-insurgency operations, and law-and-order management, enhances Agrawal’s role in national security.
- Central Deputation Experience: The posting is part of the government’s ongoing strategy to rotate experienced officers through central agencies, thereby expanding their exposure and operational expertise at a national level.
- Operational & Administrative Impact: With his experience in both policing and financial crime investigation, Agrawal is expected to contribute to strengthening operational efficiency, administration, and policy implementation within the CRPF.
Background on CRPF
The Central Reserve Police Force is India’s largest paramilitary force, tasked with internal security, anti-insurgency operations, and providing assistance to state governments during crises. Leadership positions such as DIG play a critical role in ensuring effective command and coordination across units.
Outlook
With this appointment, the government aims to leverage Agrawal’s extensive policing experience and administrative capabilities to enhance CRPF’s operational readiness and efficiency. Analysts suggest that such rotations of seasoned IPS officers to central forces help in bridging state and national security priorities, while also grooming leaders for future senior-level roles in the police and paramilitary hierarchy.
