Varanasi, UP: Varanasi witnessed heightened tensions between the police and the local legal fraternity over the past few days. Amidst this ongoing lawyer-police dispute, police officers and personnel have rallied in strong support of ADCP Varuna Zone, IPS officer Neetu Kadyan, through an extensive social media campaign.
Over the last two days, UP Police employees have flooded platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter with messages of support, highlighting 2021 batch IPS Officer of UP cadre, Ms Neetu Kadyan’s dedication and leadership. Hashtags like #ipsNeetu, #Varanasipolice, and #gloryofuppolice have trended widely as officers showcase her as a symbol of pride for the police force.
Legal Friction Escalates: Petition Filed Against Police Officials
A significant escalation came with a petition filed by lawyers demanding action against Neetu Kadyan and several other police officers, including ACP Crime Vidush Saxena, ACP Cantt Nitin Taneja, Cantt Station In-charge Shivakant Mishra, and numerous unidentified inspectors and constables. The petition was scheduled to be heard in the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court.
In a dramatic public protest, around 700 lawyers marched through Varanasi streets calling for the removal of Ms Kadyan. They also gathered outside the residences of the Police Commissioner and the District Magistrate, raising slogans against the police administration.

Supporters described Neetu as an inspiration and a role model for officers across the state, lauding her as a “true guardian” and “the pride and glory of the UP Police.” The campaign is seen as a unifying message within the police force, emphasizing strength and resilience amid public scrutiny.
Background: The Land Dispute and Subsequent Clash
The conflict traces back to a land dispute between two neighbors in Puari Khurd village, under Badagaon police jurisdiction. Allegations surfaced that construction on plot number 125 was ongoing despite a temporary stay order, escalating tensions.
On September 16, an incident occurred where lawyers allegedly assaulted a Varanasi police inspector at the police station, sparking widespread outrage. The inspector’s family, frustrated by the lack of arrests, visited the station, which led to a confrontation between lawyers and police officers, accompanied by loud sloganeering and chaos.

Ms Neetu Kadyan hails from Arya Nagar, Jhajjar district in Haryana. Daughter of Sampooran Kadyan, a farmer and property dealer, and Lakshmi Devi, an ANM, Neetu’s rise in civil services has been remarkable.
- She secured the 254th rank in the UPSC 2017 exam on her third attempt and was initially awarded an IRS position.
- With perseverance, she achieved an IPS rank (158th) in the 2019 UPSC exam.
