Director General of Maharashtra Police recently wrote a letter to the State Government demanding one month’s extra salary for police personnel serving 24/7 in the state. According to DGP Sanjay Pandey, cops work even on Government holidays with full dedication throughout the year without any leaves.
The demand of DGP is justified as some states are already providing their police personnel one month extra salary as an incentive allowance. In his letter to Additional Chief Secretary (Home), he writes, “To maintain law and order, the police personnel have to remain present on duty even on government holidays as well as public holidays. As a result, they are not allowed to take public holidays like other government employees. Hence, they must be compensated.”
The demand raised because in general there are at least 137 government leaves are allotted to every govt. employee every year but for police department there are only 79 days of leave, including 52 days leave as govt holidays, 15 days of additional laves and 4 days leave for miscellaneous reasons and some others.
According to the proposal the incentives for working on public holidays is already been given as 1 month’s extra salary, by states like Punjab, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Mizoram and Haryana.
