Ms. Ilma Afroz (2018-batch IPS officer), the incumbent Superintendent of Police (SP) of Baddi police district, rejoined duty on December 17th, 2024, after a 42-day leave that sparked political controversy. She reported at the Police Headquarters in Shimla and is expected to resume her role within a couple of days.
The dispute began in August when Ilma issued a challan against a vehicle linked to Doon Congress MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary for alleged illegal mining. The MLA raised the matter in the Assembly, leading to a breach of privilege motion. Adding to the tension, scrap dealer Ram Kishan, reportedly close to a Congress leader, staged an attack on his bulletproof vehicle after being denied a gun licence. Ilma’s investigation exposed the incident, further intensifying political scrutiny.
Despite mounting pressure, the state government refrained from intervening, as Ilma was handling a court-entrusted sexual harassment probe in Nalagarh. The controversy also drew criticism from former Chief Minister Shanta Kumar and became a political issue in Ilma’s home state, Uttar Pradesh, during recent byelections.
Hailing from Kundarki village in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad district, Ilma Afroz took charge as Baddi SP on January 7th, 2024. Known for her firm stance on law enforcement and refusal to yield to political pressure, she has earned both praise and criticism throughout her tenure.
