Chandigarh: The investigation into the tragic death of senior Haryana-cadre IPS officer Y Puran Kumar has reached a critical juncture, with the Chandigarh Police approaching the local court seeking directions to secure the deceased officer’s laptop and expedite the post-mortem examination.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case has termed the laptop a “crucial piece of evidence” that could unlock vital clues about the circumstances leading to the officer’s death on October 7, 2025.
IPS Puran Kumar Suicide Case: Court Notice to Family for Laptop Handover
Chief Judicial Magistrate Raminder Kaur of the Chandigarh District Court issued a notice to Amneet P Kumar, IAS, wife of the late IPS officer, directing her to respond to the police application by October 15, 2025.
The court notice specifically addresses two critical aspects: permission for body identification at PGI for post-mortem proceedings and the handover of the deceased officer’s Apple MacBook Pro for forensic examination.
The SIT, led by DSP Charanjit Singh, issued a separate notice under Section 94 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on October 13, requesting the laptop be handed over for examination at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Chandigarh.
Why the Laptop Holds the Key
Police sources reveal that the laptop allegedly contains the typed draft of the suicide note that Y Puran Kumar left behind. The device is expected to provide crucial digital evidence including:
- Original draft and timestamp of the suicide note.
- Email communications and recipients of the note.
- Login activity and digital fingerprints.
- Last modified files and search history.
- Biometric access records.
“The laptop may also carry information about when the note was written, who it was shared with, and the exact time it was sent,” an investigator stated.
The SIT aims to authenticate whether the note was indeed written by the IPS officer himself and to establish a clear timeline of events.
Family’s Response: Technical Challenges Cited
In her reply to the SIT, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar clarified that she has fully cooperated with the investigation and allowed SIT officials access to the laptop along with their IT team.
However, she stated that the technical team was unable to complete the process of generating the required hash value – a unique digital fingerprint needed for forensic authentication.
She has requested that a certified backup of the laptop’s contents be provided before forensic analysis, citing the presence of sensitive personal and family data.
IPS Puran Kumar Suicide Case: What is Hash Value and Why It Matters
The police explained that hash value generation requires specialized technical support available only at CFSL offices and cannot be created on-site.
Hash values act as a unique “digital fingerprint” for electronic evidence, ensuring its integrity and authenticity throughout the investigation. By comparing hash values generated at different times, investigators can detect if data has been altered, making the evidence court-admissible.
IPS Puran Kumar Suicide Case: Post-Mortem Delayed Despite Multiple Requests
The Chandigarh Police have sent multiple reminders to the family through the Investigating Officer (IO), Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), and Inspector General of Police (IGP), urging early post-mortem to preserve crucial forensic evidence.
“Conducting the PME at the earliest is absolutely vital at this stage to preserve important forensic evidence and in the interest of justice,” the police statement emphasized.
Officials indicated that the post-mortem was most likely to be conducted on October 15, even if the family maintained its current stance.
The Case Background: Allegations of Caste-Based Discrimination
Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer posted as IGP at the Police Training Centre, Rohtak, allegedly shot himself at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, on October 7, 2025.
In his final note, the 52-year-old officer accused eight senior police officials, including Haryana Director General of Police Shatrujeet Kapur, of “blatant caste-based discrimination, targeted mental harassment, public humiliation and atrocities.”
The case has been registered under FIR No. 156 dated October 9 at Police Station Sector 11, Chandigarh, including offences under Sections 108 and 3(5) of the BNS, along with Sections 3(1)(r) and 3(2)(v) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi expressed condolences and demanded a thorough investigation. “It is disturbing that an IPS officer, whose wife is an IAS officer and brother-in-law is an MLA, had to take such a step. This raises serious questions that must be answered.”
Congress leader K Raju asked the Haryana government to take action against officers named in the final note, stating that Kumar took his life after being “humiliated” in the police department.

The Haryana Government has issued a directive urging strict vigilance and coordinated efforts to maintain communal harmony and law and order.
The circular emphasizes the “urgent need to maintain strict vigil and ensure communal harmony across all districts” in view of tensions surrounding the officer’s death.
What Happens Next
With the court setting October 15 as the deadline for response, the investigation is expected to move forward rapidly. The post-mortem examination and forensic analysis of the laptop will be critical in establishing the facts of the case.
The SIT continues to examine official correspondence and case records as part of its wider investigation into the systemic issues that allegedly led to this tragic incident.
