Chandigarh: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed Surendra Singh Yadav, a 1997-batch IPS officer, as Deputy Inspector General in the Border Security Force (BSF) on a deputation basis. This appointment comes with immediate effect, as Yadav has been relieved of his duties as the Director General of Police (DGP) in Chandigarh.
Yadav, who had been serving as the police chief of Chandigarh since March 2024, will now take on his new assignment in the BSF, marking a shift before the completion of his first year in the role.
Prior to his tenure in Chandigarh, Yadav was promoted to the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) grade in 2022 and had served in various key positions in Delhi, including roles in traffic, the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW), and the Anti-Corruption Branch.
During his short tenure as DGP of Chandigarh, Yadav oversaw one of the largest reshuffles in the history of the city’s police force, involving the transfer of 2,763 police personnel, including sub-inspectors, assistant sub-inspectors, head constables, and constables.
With Yadav’s departure, Raj Kumar Singh, a 2004-batch IPS officer from the AGMUT cadre, has been appointed as the acting DGP of Chandigarh until further orders. This transition marks a significant development in the Chandigarh Police leadership.
Notably, after Kiran Bedi, Yadav’s tenure is the shortest one among police chiefs. DGP Yadav spent one year and 14 days while Bedi was transferred merely after 44 days.
