IRS officer Khitesh Gupta has been appointed as Joint Commissioner of Income Tax (Officer on Special Duty) in the office of the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Delhi region.
Mr Gupta is an Indian Revenue Service (IRS-IT) officer of the 2014 batch and brings with him a decade of experience in the Government of India.
The Income Tax Department (ITD), operating under the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance, is the primary agency responsible for direct tax collection in the country. It is headed by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), which oversees the enforcement of direct tax laws, most notably the Income-tax Act, 1961. Additionally, the department enforces other economic legislations such as the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act, 1988, and the Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015.
