Jharkhand: A delegation from the Government of Jharkhand, led by Sudivya Kumar, Minister of Urban Development & Housing, visited Coventry, United Kingdom, to gain insights into sustainable urban development, zero-emission city management, and future mobility solutions. The initiative is part of Jharkhand’s ongoing efforts to design smart, climate-resilient cities with advanced urban infrastructure.
During the visit, the delegation engaged with Coventry City Council and Coventry University to study Coventry’s approach to city management, innovative planning strategies, and the collaborative role of academia and government in driving urban transformation.
Focus on Zero-Emission Mobility and Clean Transport
A key highlight of the visit was a tour of the Coventry city bus depot, where the delegation observed electric vehicle (EV)–based urban mobility systems. The delegation studied EV technologies, depot operations, fleet management, and the city’s zero-emission public transport solutions designed to meet the needs of large-scale urban mobility.
The delegation also reviewed Coventry’s Very Light Rail (VLR) system—an affordable, low-carbon, and people-centric urban rail network. The VLR model is being recognized globally for offering sustainable and inclusive public transport solutions in cities.
Learning from Innovation in Urban Planning
The discussions with Coventry City Council emphasized policy integration, technology adoption, and citizen-focused urban planning. Presentations highlighted innovations in city mobility, future transportation systems, and the development of inclusive public spaces designed to promote community engagement and sustainability.
Minister Sudivya Kumar remarked, “Coventry’s integrated approach to clean mobility, urban innovation, and public space design offers valuable lessons for Jharkhand. These learnings will help us shape clean, smart, and future-ready cities through sustainable transport systems, better urban planning, and enhanced public spaces.”
Jharkhand’s Commitment to Future-Ready Cities
The Coventry visit marks a significant step in Jharkhand’s pursuit of international best practices for sustainable urban development and climate-responsive city management. The insights gained will contribute to building smart, environmentally responsible cities that prioritize accessibility, sustainability, and improved quality of life for residents.
