Garhwa: The Jharkhand Department of Fisheries has launched a series of development projects across the state, generating optimism among residents of the Garhwa region. Of the seven fisheries projects announced, five have been allocated to Garhwa, highlighting the area’s growing importance in inland fisheries and aquaculture.
Local communities, particularly those engaged in fish farming and trade, have welcomed the move and thanked the government for prioritising the region. Fisheries remain a key economic activity in Garhwa, and the new projects are expected to strengthen income-generation opportunities for hundreds of families.
₹4 Crore Project Approved Under FIDF
One of the major initiatives has been approved for Nurul Hoda Ansari of Pipra village in Meral block under the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF). The project has received an allocation of ₹4 crore and will focus on modern fish farming techniques, infrastructure development, and fish seed production units.
The FIDF scheme aims to create robust fisheries infrastructure in both inland and marine sectors while boosting fish production. It supports the objectives of the Blue Revolution, which seeks to enhance national fish output and improve the socio-economic conditions of fishing communities through sustainable practices.

Cage Culture and Riverine Fisheries Initiatives
In addition to the FIDF project, four more fisheries schemes are in the pipeline in the Garhwa region. These include the installation of fish cages in the Annaraj Dam, which is expected to increase production while ensuring environmental sustainability.
The District Fisheries Department is also working to implement the Riverine Fisheries for Flowing Waters (RRF) scheme. Under this programme, rivers and streams with natural water flow are selected for fish farming, enabling eco-friendly cultivation while utilising local water resources efficiently.
Empowering Tribal Communities Through Fisheries
A key objective of the fisheries initiatives is the economic empowerment of tribal communities living in the region. The government aims to connect tribal families with fish farming and trade, enabling them to become self-reliant and improve their livelihoods through sustainable income sources.
Positive Outlook for Fish Farmers
Villagers have expressed happiness over the large-scale projects being introduced in their area, saying the initiatives will increase employment and household incomes. Experts also see strong growth potential, noting that Garhwa has around 7,000 registered fishermen. Officials believe that wider participation in these schemes could significantly enhance fish production and drive long-term progress in Jharkhand’s fisheries sector.
