In a landmark move to boost tourism in Jharkhand, the Jharkhand Tourism Development Corporation (JTDC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) to launch mining tourism in the state. The MoU was formalised in the presence of state Tourism Minister Mr. Sudivya Kumar on Monday.
Three Mining Tourism Circuits to Begin from Urimari Open Cast Mines
As per the agreement, tourists will now be permitted to enter CCL’s mining zones under strict safety protocols and for a prescribed fee. The initiative will commence with three designated mining tourism circuits, all originating from the Urimari Open Cast Coal Mines in Ranchi North.
Visitors will be allowed in guided batches of 10 to 20 people, with tours conducted twice a week, each lasting around two to three hours. Tourists will be required to sign a self-declaration form before entering the mines, and children under 12 years must be accompanied by a guardian. The experience will include demonstrations of mining operations and the technology used in modern coal extraction.
A New Identity for Jharkhand: The Mining Tourism Circuit
Tourism Minister Mr. Sudivya Kumar hailed the MoU as a milestone for the state. “Jharkhand will soon be recognised as a mining tourism circuit,” he said, adding that the state has made a strong beginning with the first circuit. He also revealed that discussions are underway with BCCL and SAIL to expand mining tourism across other parts of Jharkhand, with positive developments expected soon.
Support from CCL and Boost for Students and Tourists
Mr. Nilendu Kumar Singh, CMD of CCL, lauded the initiative and confirmed that the remaining two tourism circuits would soon be operational, adhering strictly to safety norms. He also appreciated the state government’s proactive role in launching the initiative within just four months.
Tourism Director Ms. Vijaya N Jadav stated that the initiative would not only offer a unique experience to general tourists but also benefit students of geology and engineering, offering them insights into industrial operations and mining technology.
This pioneering tourism effort is expected to bring Jharkhand’s rich industrial heritage to the forefront and diversify the state’s tourism offerings beyond its traditional ecological and cultural attractions.
