New Delhi: CLAT 2027 will be conducted without any changes to its exam pattern or syllabus. The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) has officially confirmed that the recommendations made by its Expert Committee will not be implemented for the upcoming exam. Instead, the existing CLAT format will continue, while the proposed reforms may be considered for CLAT 2028 after public consultation.
The decision was announced through the Consortium’s official press release on July 21, 2026. The Expert Committee’s report has also been released for public feedback.
CLAT 2027 Exam Pattern Will Not Change
Students preparing for CLAT 2027 can continue their preparation without changing their study plan. The Governing Body of the Consortium of NLUs has decided that the current CLAT syllabus, exam pattern and marking scheme will remain unchanged for the 2027 entrance examination. However, paper setters have been asked to improve the quality of questions by considering the Expert Committee’s recommendations wherever possible.
Why Did the Consortium Delay CLAT Reforms
The Expert Committee submitted its final report on February 2, 2026. In its submission letter, the committee clearly said that any major changes should be announced early so students would get enough time to prepare. However, the Consortium published the report more than five months later, making it difficult to introduce major reforms before CLAT 2027. Because of this delay, the existing exam pattern will continue this year.
What Changes Were Suggested for CLAT 2027
The Expert Committee recommended making CLAT more focused on logical reasoning, legal aptitude and problem-solving skills instead of memorization. The committee believes students should be tested on their thinking ability rather than coaching-based learning.
Proposed CLAT UG Pattern
The committee suggested reducing the undergraduate paper from five sections to three sections.
The proposed sections are:
- Logical Reasoning and Legal Aptitude
- Language and Comprehension
- Quantitative Techniques
It also recommended removing the General Knowledge and Current Affairs section completely.
Proposed CLAT PG Pattern
For the postgraduate exam, the committee suggested keeping the current three sections with lower weightage. It also proposed adding two new sections:
- Legal Knowledge
- Constructed Response Problem Question
These recommendations have not been approved for CLAT 2027.
Expert Panel Suggested Better Question Paper Preparation
The committee also recommended improving the paper-setting process. Instead of changing paper setters every year among different NLUs, it suggested appointing professional experts through an external agency or building a permanent in-house paper-setting team. According to the report, this would improve consistency, fairness and question quality.
CLAT 2027: Public Can Send Feedback Until August 31
The Consortium has now published the Expert Committee report on its official website. Students, teachers, legal experts and the general public can submit their suggestions and feedback until August 31, 2026. The feedback will help decide whether these reforms should be introduced in future CLAT examinations.
Timeline of the CLAT Reform Committee
The Expert Committee was formed on September 15, 2025, to review and improve the CLAT examination. After collecting public feedback between October 15 and November 4, 2025, it submitted:
- Interim Report – November 11, 2025
- Final Report – February 2, 2026
- Officially Published – July 21, 2026
The committee included well-known legal academics from leading global universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Columbia Law School, London School of Economics and BML Munjal University.
Separate Committee to Review the Recommendations
During a meeting held at the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, on May 17, 2026, the Governing Body decided that the Office of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) would create another committee. This committee will review the Expert Committee’s recommendations along with public feedback before taking a final decision for CLAT 2028.
What CLAT 2027 Aspirants Should Do Now
There is no need to change your preparation strategy for CLAT 2027. Continue studying according to the current official syllabus and exam pattern. Students should also keep an eye on future announcements because the proposed reforms may become part of CLAT 2028 after the review process is completed.
