New Delhi: The IB officer Ankit Sharma murder case is back in focus after the Delhi Police informed the Delhi High Court that it plans to challenge the acquittal of six accused persons. The development came during a hearing related to the 2020 Delhi riots case involving the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma. The police told the Court that the appeal process is currently underway and will be filed soon.
IB Officer Ankit Sharma Murder Case: Delhi Police Plans Appeal Against Acquittals
The Delhi High Court was informed that the Delhi Police intends to appeal against the acquittal of six individuals who were cleared by a trial court in the Ankit Sharma murder case.

The submission was made before a Division Bench comprising Justice Prathiba M Singh and Justice Vikas Mahajan.
Special Counsel Rajat Nair, appearing for Delhi Police, stated before the Court that the authorities are in the process of filing the appeal against the acquittal order.
High Court Hearing Convicts’ Appeals
The Court was hearing appeals filed by two convicted persons in the case, Nazim and Kasim. During the proceedings, the Delhi Police informed the Bench that while these appeals were being considered, the State was also preparing its own challenge against the acquittal of six other accused. The Court recorded the statement and issued notice to Delhi Police in the appeals filed by the convicted individuals.
Background Of The IB Officer Ankit Sharma Murder Case
Ankit Sharma, an Intelligence Bureau officer, was killed during the northeast Delhi riots that took place in February 2020. The trial court delivered its judgment on July 13, 2026.
Former Aam Aadmi Party councillor Tahir Hussain and four others were convicted in the case. The convicted persons were found guilty under multiple provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including murder, kidnapping, rioting, unlawful assembly, and promoting enmity between groups.
IB Officer Ankit Sharma Murder Case: What The Trial Court Found
According to the prosecution case, Ankit Sharma went missing on February 25, 2020, during the violence in the Chand Bagh area of Delhi. His body was later recovered from a drain near Chand Bagh Pulia.
The FIR was filed based on a complaint by his father, Ravinder Kumar, who alleged that Tahir Hussain and his associates were involved in the crime. The trial court convicted five accused while acquitting six others due to insufficient evidence against them.
Next Hearing Scheduled
The Delhi High Court has fixed December 2 as the next date of hearing in the matter. The Court will continue hearing the appeals filed by the convicted persons while the Delhi Police moves ahead with its proposed appeal against the acquittal of the six accused.
