Heroic Karnataka Elephant Rescue: How a 28-Hour “Impossible Mission” Became a Triumph of Wildlife Care, IFS Parveen Kaswan Shares Video

A trapped elephant was rescued after 28 hours in Karnataka through a massive, expertly coordinated Forest Department operation that stunned the nation
Indian Masterminds Stories

In a dramatic incident in Shivanasamudra, Karnataka, a young elephant, estimated to be 10–12 years old, fell into a 60-foot-deep power plant canal and remained trapped for an exhausting 28 hours. What followed was a rescue operation so extraordinary that onlookers compared it to a scene from a high-budget action film. This feat, however, was not fiction—it was the result of the unwavering dedication of hundreds of brave Forest Department personnel.

How the Elephant Got Trapped

According to initial reports, the elephant had approached the Pioneer Genco Limited power plant canal near Bluff to drink water. A sudden powerful current dragged it into the deep structure. With steep, concrete, slippery slopes, the canal offered no escape route for the animal. Exhausted, frightened, and battling fatigue, the elephant struggled through the long hours as news of its plight spread across the region.

Mobilisation of a Massive Rescue Task Force

Soon, doctors, engineers, and forest officials converged at the spot. Under the supervision of senior leadership and wildlife experts, a strategic plan was drawn up to ensure both safety and efficiency. The scale of the operation was unlike anything the region had witnessed in recent times.

Indian Forest Service officer Mr. Parveen Kaswan (2015 batch) shared a video of the mission on November 19, describing it as “a massive and difficult operation.” He also praised the officers and staff for setting an inspiring example of humanity and professional commitment.

Engineering Meets Compassion: The Rescue Strategy

Special platforms, heavy-duty cranes, and customised support structures were brought in. After hours of careful manoeuvring, the animal was gently lifted from the canal using a crane and placed securely onto a specially arranged platform. From there, it was transported in a truck to a safe forest access point.

Freedom at Last: A Return to the Wild

In a heartwarming end to the ordeal, the elephant bolted joyfully into the forest the moment it was released—without looking back. The sight left everyone emotional, reinforcing the vital importance of coordinated wildlife conservation efforts.

A Testament to Dedicated Governance and Conservation Efforts

The operation not only showcased the efficiency of Karnataka’s forest administration but also highlighted how interdepartmental cooperation—between engineers, medical teams, and forest authorities—can lead to outstanding results in wildlife protection. It demonstrated that developmental infrastructure and wildlife care can coexist when handled with responsibility and compassion.

A Salute to the Real-Life Heroes

This rescue stands as a shining example of what humanity can achieve when compassion drives action. The Forest Department’s bravery, precision, and teamwork have earned widespread admiration across the country.
