Bengaluru: In a landmark move aimed at improving the welfare and work-life balance of police personnel, the Karnataka Police Department has announced that all officers and staff will be granted mandatory leave on their birthdays and wedding anniversaries. The circular, issued by the Director General of Police (DGP) Dr. M.A. Saleem, an IPS officer of 1993 batch, mandates unit officers to approve such leave requests without exception.
DGP Issues Circular for Mandatory Leave
The DGP’s official circular directs that all police personnel be allowed to celebrate special personal occasions, such as birthdays and wedding anniversaries, without work obligations. This order is expected to benefit lakhs of officers across the state, ensuring they can spend quality time with their families and friends on important days.
The circular emphasizes that leave on these occasions will help personnel emotionally recharge, maintain a balance between personal and professional life, and enhance overall job satisfaction.
Boosting Morale and Reducing Stress
Police work is inherently demanding, with officers often required to work long hours during emergencies, festivals, or public events, leaving little opportunity for personal time. By granting leave on birthdays and anniversaries, the Karnataka government seeks to reduce stress, improve morale, and strengthen loyalty among personnel.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar highlighted that this measure recognizes the sacrifices of police officers, fosters commitment, and ensures officers return to duty emotionally refreshed, ultimately contributing to better discipline, productivity, and performance.
Immediate Implementation Across the State
The circular mandates that unit officers must immediately approve leave requests submitted by personnel for birthdays or wedding anniversaries. The policy is part of a broader initiative to humanize work conditions in high-stress sectors such as police, army, medical services, and media, where personnel often forgo personal celebrations to serve the public.
Officials stated that this measure is expected to enhance overall employee well-being, boost productivity, and create a more motivated workforce within Karnataka Police.
A Humane Step for Police Welfare
Experts and officers have welcomed the decision, describing it as a significant and humane step toward acknowledging the personal lives of police personnel. Allowing officers to celebrate these milestones with family and loved ones is seen as a positive model for other states to consider for law enforcement and emergency service employees.
