The long-awaited Koderma-Tilaiya-Rajgir railway line, a critical infrastructure project connecting the border districts of Jharkhand and Bihar, is now in its final phase of construction and is expected to be fully operational by March 2026. Spanning 64 kilometers, this line is set to revolutionize connectivity, significantly enhancing the Buddhist tourism circuit, while offering fresh momentum to employment, trade, healthcare, and education across the region.
According to the Railway Construction Department, 43 kilometers of the line have already been completed, while work on the remaining 21 kilometers is actively underway.
A Historic Link Between Culture and Connectivity
Once operational, the railway will provide direct connectivity to Rajgir, Tilaiya, Nawada, Barhi, and Koderma, transforming the daily lives of thousands. Students, tourists, and rural residents will particularly benefit from the reduced travel time and increased access to economic and social opportunities.
The route will play a pivotal role in promoting cultural and spiritual tourism, especially as it connects important sites like Rajgir, Nalanda, and Pawapuri, integral parts of India’s ancient Buddhist heritage.
Prime Minister Modi’s Festival Gift: Doubling of Key Rail Line Approved
In a significant boost ahead of Durga Puja, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the doubling of the Bakhtiyarpur-Rajgir-Tilaiya railway line, enhancing the capacity and speed of this crucial corridor. This project will facilitate smoother travel for pilgrims and domestic tourists, while reducing congestion on existing lines.
Engineering Marvels Amid Nature’s Challenges
Railway officials have described this stretch as one of the most technically challenging in India, owing to its passage through dense forests, mountainous terrain, and remote regions. The line includes four tunnels and seven major bridges, some of which traverse areas where no prior large-scale infrastructure existed.
To preserve the region’s biodiversity, Indian Railways is also building wildlife corridors, ensuring safe migration paths for animals, especially elephants.
Faster Travel, Greener Infrastructure
Once the project is complete, the travel time between Rajgir and Ranchi is expected to reduce by three to four hours, providing immense relief to frequent commuters and long-distance travelers.
The upcoming stations, particularly at Koderma and Nawada, will be cultural showcases in themselves. They will feature local folk art, woodcraft, and solar-powered infrastructure, making them eco-friendly hubs that reflect regional identity.
Decades in the Making: A New Chapter for the Region
Originally sanctioned in the 2001-02 railway budget, the Tilaiya-Koderma line has taken nearly two decades to reach this final stage. The Ministry of Railways has allocated Rs. 446.74 crore in the 2025–26 budget to bring the project to completion.
Once operational, this line will stand as a symbol of long-term infrastructure planning, regional integration, and cultural preservation, setting a new standard for railway development in Eastern India.
