Concerns about government employees’ work ethic have often been raised, with complaints of delays, lack of seriousness, and negligence. A recent incident from Betul district, Madhya Pradesh, has brought this issue to the forefront after a government employee was caught playing cards on a computer during office hours. The shocking discovery was made by Collector Mr. Narendra Suryavanshi (2012-batch Madhya Pradesh cadre IAS officer) during a surprise inspection. Taking swift action, the Collector immediately suspended the employee and ordered a salary deduction for three others found neglecting their duties.

The incident occurred on Friday when Mr. Suryavanshi conducted an unannounced visit to the office of the Tribal Affairs Department. Upon entering, he found a government employee, playing a game of cards on his office computer instead of working. Completely unaware of the Collector’s presence, the employee continued playing until he turned around and saw Mr. Suryavanshi standing behind him. The Collector sternly reprimanded him and ordered his immediate suspension.
During the inspection, the Collector also identified three more employees displaying negligence in their duties. While they were not caught playing cards, their lax attitude led to an order for a salary cut as a disciplinary measure. Expressing strong displeasure, Mr. Suryavanshi emphasized that government offices are meant for work, not leisure. He warned that strict disciplinary action would be taken against any employee found misusing office hours.
This move serves as a strong message that indiscipline will not be tolerated in government offices. Mr. Suryavanshi reiterated that employees must take their responsibilities seriously, ensuring that government services run efficiently without unnecessary delays. The swift action taken in Betul has highlighted the importance of maintaining discipline and accountability in government workplaces.
