Bhopal: In a major financial relief to farmers in Madhya Pradesh, the central government has transferred ₹1,383 crore in crop insurance compensation to the accounts of over 14.28 lakh farmers across the state. The amount was credited to a total of 54.23 lakh insurance accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).
The compensation covers claims from three different crop seasons — Rabi 2023–24, Kharif 2024, and Rabi 2024–25 — reflecting a consolidated payout for crop losses incurred due to natural calamities.
A Timely Financial Lifeline for Farmers
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav hailed the initiative as a crucial support for farmers ahead of the festive season and during the ongoing monsoon period. He stated:
“This amount comes at a critical time when farmers are awaiting the main harvest, and the rains are still ongoing. It will offer major financial relief and help them prepare for the upcoming agricultural season.”
He expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for their continuous support toward farmers’ welfare.

PM Fasal Bima Yojana: Shield Against Crop Loss
Launched on May 13, 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana aims to provide insurance coverage to farmers against crop losses caused by natural disasters such as floods, droughts, hailstorms, and unseasonal rains.
In Madhya Pradesh, the scheme is also extended to horticultural crops under the Revised Weather-Based Horticulture Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS).
Under PMFBY:
- Farmers pay a minimal premium (2% for Kharif, 1.5% for Rabi, and 5% for horticultural crops),
- The balance is subsidized by the government,
- In case of crop damage, farmers receive compensation based on officially assessed loss.

Widespread Coverage Across the State
The relief amount has been distributed through a wide network of insurance accounts held by farmers in different regions of Madhya Pradesh. According to government sources:
- The Indore and Ujjain divisions alone saw significant disbursal,
- The payment spans over three cropping seasons, ensuring that previously delayed claims are also addressed.
CM Yadav emphasized the state’s continued commitment to ensuring timely insurance support:
“Our government stands with farmers at every step. We will ensure compensation for crop losses due to any reason — natural or otherwise.”
Nationwide Initiative: PMFBY Payouts Across India
Madhya Pradesh is part of a larger national disbursement effort by the Union Government, under which over ₹3,200 crore was transferred recently to farmers across India as part of PMFBY claims for previous cropping seasons.
The Ministry of Agriculture has also introduced reforms to speed up claim settlements and expand awareness among rural communities to maximize scheme benefits.

Looking Ahead
While this large-scale transfer provides much-needed relief, experts suggest that improving transparency, speed of damage assessments, and awareness at the grassroots will further enhance the scheme’s effectiveness. Several farmers’ organizations have previously highlighted delays and eligibility issues in certain districts.
Nevertheless, with a strong administrative push and political will, Madhya Pradesh appears to be on track to strengthen its agricultural resilience and ensure economic stability for its farming community.
