Major General Lisamma PV has assumed charge as the Additional Director General (ADG) of the Military Nursing Service (MNS), the apex position in India’s military nursing cadre, the Ministry of Defence announced on Thursday. She succeeds Major General Sheena PD, who retired on April 30 after an illustrious career spanning four decades.
Hailing from Kollam district in Kerala, Maj Gen Lisamma PV brings with her nearly 40 years of experience in military healthcare. She joined the Military Nursing Service in 1986 after completing her nursing education at the School of Nursing, Military Hospital, Jalandhar.
Over the years, she has held a number of critical leadership positions within the Armed Forces Medical Services. These include her tenure as Principal of the College of Nursing at Command Hospital Air Force, Bengaluru, Principal Matron at Command Hospital (Eastern Command), and most recently, Principal Matron at the prestigious Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi.
An officer with a strong academic background, Maj Gen Lisamma holds degrees in Arts and Law, along with a Master’s in Hospital Administration. She is widely recognized for her commitment to training, research, and the promotion of evidence-based nursing practices. Her leadership style is marked by a deep focus on professional excellence, patient care, and the empowerment of military nursing personnel.
The Military Nursing Service is a vital arm of the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), providing dedicated nursing care to serving personnel of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as their families. As ADG, Maj Gen Lisamma PV will oversee the operational and strategic aspects of nursing services across the armed forces, with a mandate to enhance both quality and capacity in military healthcare.
Her appointment is seen as a step forward in strengthening the role of women leaders in the Indian Armed Forces and reaffirming the importance of nursing as a backbone of the military medical ecosystem.
