Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. (MDL) has reached a significant milestone with the keel laying of the first Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) being built for Navi Merchants, Denmark. The ceremony was held at MDL’s South Yard and presided over by MDL’s Chairman and managing Director (CMD) Biju George. Peter Bertelsen, Technical Director of Navi Merchants, along with senior officials from the Det Norske Veritas (DNV) classification society and MDL attended the event.
The keel laying marks a crucial step in the execution of a contract between MDL and Navi Merchants for the design, construction, and delivery of six MPVs. Each vessel in the contract is valued at approximately USD 14 million, with the first ship scheduled for delivery in April 2026.
The MPV designated Yard 21001, boasts an overall length of 116.2 meters and a deadweight of 7,500 tonnes. It is engineered to achieve a speed of no less than 11 knots, with a shaft generator power take-off of approximately 85kW. The vessel will be constructed under the rules and certification of the DNV classification society.
MDL initiated production activities for this project on September 24, 2024. The successful keel-laying event highlights MDL’s expanding footprint in the global shipbuilding industry and strengthens its expertise in executing international contracts.
Speaking at the event, CMD Biju George expressed pride in MDL’s shipbuilding capabilities and its commitment to delivering top-tier vessels to global clients. “This milestone demonstrates MDL’s dedication to innovation, quality, and timely execution of projects. We are honored to collaborate with Navi Merchants on this prestigious initiative,” he stated.
