New Delhi: The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has selected Minhaj Uddin Nizami (IRS (C&IT): 2016) for appointment as Deputy Secretary in the Department of Commerce in New Delhi under the Central Staffing Scheme.
According to an office memorandum issued by the Office of the Establishment Officer in October 2026, Nizami was recommended for central deputation by the Department of Revenue. His tenure will be four years from the date he assumes charge, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The Department of Revenue has been requested to relieve him from his current duties immediately so that he can take up the new assignment.
Who Is Minhaj Uddin Nizami?
Minhaj Uddin Nizami is an officer of the 2016 batch of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes). His service falls under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), which administers indirect taxes, including goods and services tax and customs duties.
Before his selection for central deputation, Minhaj Uddin Nizami (IRS (C&IT): 2016) was serving as Joint Commissioner in Mangalore under the Bengaluru GST and Central Excise Zone. He has now been appointed Deputy Secretary in the Department of Commerce for a tenure of four years from the date he assumes charge, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
What Is His New Role in the Department of Commerce?
As Deputy Secretary, Nizami will join the Department of Commerce, which functions under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The department deals with matters relating to India’s domestic and international trade, export promotion, trade policy and commercial engagement with other countries.
The Deputy Secretary position forms part of the department’s administrative and policy machinery. The specific division or portfolio that Nizami will handle has not been identified in the appointment memorandum.
His selection under the Central Staffing Scheme will bring him into the Union Government’s central administrative structure for the prescribed tenure.
Four-Year Tenure Under Central Staffing Scheme
The DoPT memorandum specifies a four-year tenure beginning on the date Nizami takes charge of the post. The appointment will remain valid for that period unless further orders provide otherwise.
The memorandum also reiterates the applicable joining requirement under the Central Staffing Scheme. Citing directions conveyed through an earlier DoPT circular dated August 17, 2005, it states that an officer is expected to join within three weeks of the appointment order.
Failure to join within the prescribed period may lead to the initiation of debarment proceedings under the scheme.
The Department of Commerce has also been requested to forward a copy of the appointment notification once it is issued.
Nizami’s appointment marks his selection for a central deputation assignment in the Department of Commerce, following the recommendation of the Department of Revenue.
