New Delhi / Ujjain: Ujjain became the center of scientific and spiritual discourse on April 3, as the international conference “Mahakal: The Master of Time” brought together scholars, scientists, and thinkers from across India and abroad. The event emphasized the integration of modern science, astronomy, and Vedic knowledge for sustainable development and youth engagement.
Ujjain Proposed as Global Time Calculation Center
During the conference, experts discussed establishing Ujjain as the global center of time calculation. The event highlighted proposals to promote Mahakal Standard Time (MST) as an alternative to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The conference was held at the Taramandal Complex, with Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav inaugurating the program alongside Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and thinker Suresh Soni.

Development Projects Launched for Simhasth 2028
The conference also marked the foundation-laying of major infrastructure projects ahead of Simhasth 2028:
- 19.80 km, 4-lane bypass at a cost of ₹701.86 crore
- Expansion of Samrat Vikramaditya Heritage Unit worth ₹22.52 crore
- Launch of Vidyaarthi Vigyan Manthan 2026-27 website
- Release of educational books related to science and innovation
These initiatives aim to strengthen Ujjain’s infrastructure and promote scientific awareness among pilgrims and residents.
Ujjain: A City of Science and Religion
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav stated that Ujjain is not just a religious hub but also a historic center of science, mathematics, and astronomy. He noted that centuries ago, techniques were developed here to measure time using the sun’s shadow, and Ujjain was considered the geographical midpoint of the Earth. He highlighted that ancient scholars in Ujjain calculated celestial positions long before modern astronomy systems emerged.
Science and Spirituality: Time, Space, and Mahakal
Dr. Yadav emphasized the connection between time, space, and Lord Shiva as Mahakal, highlighting that Vedic texts acknowledged scientific truths about the universe long before modern discoveries. He said Ujjain’s scientific heritage is now being revived through initiatives like the Science City and educational programs.
Ujjain Science City and Future Plans
The Chief Minister inaugurated a science center costing over ₹15 crore as part of establishing Ujjain as a hub for science and innovation. These initiatives align with preparations for Simhasth 2028, which is expected to attract around 40 crore pilgrims. The state government aims to highlight Ujjain’s scientific and astronomical significance alongside its religious importance.

Experts Stress Revival of Indian Knowledge Systems
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized the need to revive India’s scientific and cultural knowledge systems. He highlighted that modern technological power is measured not by military might but through space and drone technology.
Thinker Suresh Soni noted that ancient Indian sages had already calculated time and named celestial bodies, forming the foundation of today’s global calendar. VK Saraswat, NITI Aayog member, stressed connecting Vedic knowledge with modern science to educate youth and showcase India’s contributions globally.
Youth Engagement in Science and Innovation
The conference focused on inspiring youth to embrace scientific thinking and innovation. Experts highlighted that India’s vision of becoming a $30 trillion economy depends on promoting technology, research, and self-reliance among the next generation.
Dr. S. Ghanti Murthy, National Coordinator of the Indian Knowledge System, said over 1,000 students participated in discussions on science, space, drones, and security, aiming to revive India’s rich scientific heritage.
