Barwani/Bhopal: In a major push towards eradicating sickle cell anemia by 2047, Madhya Pradesh has ramped up its statewide campaign with renewed public health commitments, large-scale screenings, and bold policy suggestions – including mandatory genetic card matching before marriage.
Addressing a state-level conference on World Sickle Cell Day held in Barwani, Governor Mangubhai Patel and Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav emphasized awareness, early diagnosis, and community involvement as the key pillars of the state’s strategy against the hereditary blood disorder.
1.06 Crore Screened; Barwani Most Affected
Chief Minister Dr. Yadav, speaking virtually from Indore due to inclement weather, announced that over 1.06 crore people in the state have already been screened under the National Sickle Cell Elimination Mission. Barwani district has emerged as the most affected region, prompting the deployment of dedicated health volunteers known as “Sickle Friends.”
“Just like we match horoscopes before marriage, it’s now time to match the sickle cell genetic cards of the bride and groom,” said Dr Yadav. “Early detection increases chances of control and better health outcomes.”
The Chief Minister also unveiled plans for a new medical college in Khargone, promising improved health infrastructure for the entire Nimar region.
National Commitment to Eradicate Sickle Cell by 2047
Governor Mangubhai Patel, himself from the tribal community, called for collective action and grassroots awareness to defeat the disease. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to tribal welfare and the central government’s 2047 eradication goal.
“Awareness is the biggest weapon,” said Governor Patel. “Testing during pregnancy and for newborns within 72 hours is essential. Patients should stay active, eat nutritious food, and follow medical advice.”
The Governor also launched a sickle cell management guide and inaugurated an exhibition on awareness, yoga, and health practices.
