New Delhi: The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening skill development initiatives and enhancing employability among India’s youth. The collaboration seeks to bridge the gap between higher education and industry-relevant skills, ensuring a job-ready workforce for the country.

Establishment of Skill Centres Across the Country

Under the partnership, 70 IGNOU Regional Centres will host Skill Centres under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY). These centres will provide training programs aligned with industry requirements and national skill standards, giving students and young professionals access to quality vocational education and practical skills.

Integration of Higher Education and Skill Training

The MoU aims to integrate higher education with skill development through credit-linked learning models, enabling learners to earn academic credits while acquiring vocational skills. This approach ensures that skill development is not only practical but also academically recognized, fostering greater career opportunities for students.

Focus on Entrepreneurship, Employability, and Upskilling

The collaboration will emphasize entrepreneurship development, employability enhancement, and continuous upskilling. Leveraging blended learning methods and digital platforms, the initiative seeks to make training more accessible, flexible, and adaptive to evolving industry needs. This digital approach will also allow learners from remote areas to benefit from quality skill training.

Strengthening Training Infrastructure and Workforce Readiness

The partnership is expected to enhance training infrastructure across the country and create a more skilled and future-ready workforce. By combining the educational expertise of IGNOU with MSDE’s nationwide skill development framework, the initiative aims to generate a strong pipeline of qualified, industry-ready professionals across sectors.

About IGNOU

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is one of the largest open universities in the world, established in 1985 by the Government of India. IGNOU provides flexible, distance, and online education across diverse disciplines, aiming to make higher education accessible and inclusive for learners across India.
