New Delhi: Nachiketa Jha, a 2003-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the Joint Secretary at the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), Government of India, effective December 19, 2025. This role places him at the heart of India’s internal and external security policymaking, working closely with the National Security Advisor (NSA).
Distinguished Career in Uttar Pradesh Police
Before this central deputation, IPS Jha served as the Home Secretary of Uttar Pradesh from December 2024. He has also held senior posts as Inspector General (IG) in key regions, including Meerut Range (March 2023–December 2024) and Agra Range. During his tenure in Meerut, he earned a reputation for handling sensitive cases with efficiency and integrity.
Central Deputation and Intelligence Bureau Experience
Earlier in his career, Jha was deputed to the central government, serving as Deputy Director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB). Born on August 29, 1977, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, he is the son of Prem Prakash Jha. He completed his Master’s degree in Economics followed by an LLB, demonstrating that a strong academic foundation in arts and law can lead to a successful career in the Indian Police Service.

Mr Jha cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2002 and was allotted the Uttar Pradesh cadre in 2003.
