New Delhi: In a landmark diplomatic appointment, Nagma Mohamed Mallick, a seasoned Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1991 batch, has been named India’s next Ambassador to Japan. The Ministry of External Affairs officially announced her appointment on October 16, noting that she is expected to assume her new charge shortly.
Currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Poland, Mallick is a trailblazer in Indian diplomacy, having held several pioneering roles throughout her illustrious career—including becoming the first woman Deputy Chief of Protocol (Ceremonial) in the Ministry of External Affairs.

Mallick’s journey began in 1991, when she joined the Indian Foreign Service after completing her academic studies in English Literature (Bachelor’s) and Sociology (Master’s). A multilingual officer, she speaks English, French, Hindi, Urdu, and Malayalam.
Her first foreign posting was in Paris, where she worked both in the Indian Embassy and in India’s Permanent Mission to UNESCO. Back home, she began as a Desk Officer in the West Europe Division and later served in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) under PM I.K. Gujral, between 1997 and 1998.
